FL Zeta History

In August of 2003, Corey Adams, a representative of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, came to the University of Tampa to re-colonize after loosing a chapter due to unfortunate circumstances. Headquarters brought with them the Balanced Man program; something that was novel and fresh to current and past Greek culture at the University of Tampa. The former chapter as it was rumored, was number one on this campus, and the new chapter would follow this legacy under the guidance of the Balanced Man Program. The best of the best were interviewed; with only recommendations from recognized organizations and esteemed faculty being eligible.

The result was 40 men who would become the new founding fathers of the FL Zeta Chapter at the University of Tampa. Corey Adams is quoted as saying, “this is probably the most diverse group of men I have ever assembled into one chapter.” Shortly after we lost some 14 members, but the core 6 founding fathers stood strong and built an organization that would flourish and provide a lasting impact on the campus and community.
Today, we strive to establish lasting local traditions for further brothers to call their own. As for living up to the previous chapter, we have already met those successes and now look to higher achievements. Being a new chapter with new goals, we developed our own mission statement:

We, the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon, strive to better ourselves and influence our surrounding communities in a positive way. We live by the three principles of Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love. Our national fraternity’s mission statement is “Building Balanced Leaders for the World’s Communities.” To achieve this goal, we develop each brother in both mind and body. The sound mind encompasses a brother’s academics, interpersonal, and intrapersonal relationships. The sound body encompasses a brother’s athletic involvement, physical activity, and health related decisions. Through positive brotherly influence and a vast variety of programming, we foster an environment where each brother can develop in both mind and body while forming fraternal bonds that will last a lifetime.

The dedication and commitment to achieving our mission has guided us to earning multiple awards and recognitions. As the Most Impactful Chapter and the Fraternity of the Year, we look to extending our talents to the community and compete more competitively with other SigEp Chapters nationally. On November 12, 2005, the Tampa SEC chapter officially became the Florida Zeta chapter, receiving our charter during an extravagant ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Clearwater.
